Scottish words

Of course, this is from another nursery rhyme.

This time is ‘Bobby Shaftoe’.

 

The lyrics are these:

Bobby Shaftoe’s gone to sea,
Silver buckles on his knee;
He’ll come back and marry me,
Bonny Bobby Shaftoe!
Bobby Shaftoe’s bright and fair,
Combing down his yellow hair;
He’s my ‘ain’ (=love) for ever ‘mair'(=more),
Bonny Bobby Shaftoe!
Bobby Shaftoe’s tall and slim,
He’s always dressed so neat and trim,
The ladies they all keek at him,
Bonny Bobby Shaftoe!
Bobby Shaftoe’s getting a bairn,
For to dangle in his arm;
In his arm and on his knee,
Bobby Shaftoe loves me! 

– “Keek” = peep (look, throw glances at)

– “Bairn” = child, baby
