Blue tail fly

The “Blue Tail Fly”, also known as “Jimmy Crack Corn” is one of these old slavery songs from the United States. Apparently, it dates from the 19th century.

It’s a quite long song, and there are different versions.
It was a minstrel song, performed in theatres where black people were acting with white people.

Here is a video of Burl Ives singing the song live. It’s not the best quality, but it’s well sung and it’s a famous version.

It starts like this:

      When I was young I used to wait
      On the boss and hand him his plate;
      And pass down the bottle when he got dry,
      And brush away the blue tail fly.

        Jimmy crack corn and I don’t care,
       Jimmy crack corn and I don’t care,
       Jimmy crack corn and I don’t care,
       My master’s gone away.
